Armored Core 6: Environment Analysis

Armored Core 6 is arguably one of my favorite games in 2023. It's not perfect in terms of graphics or plot, but the set design and industrial design in it captivated and impressed me. Its unique natural design reflects the overall tone of the game. And the stunning architectural design really blew me away.

The story takes place in the future, on a planet called Rubicon, where a large number of industrial facilities have been built because of the discovery of a new energy source called " Coral". The player takes on the role of a special pilot “RAVEN/612” who is active as a mercenary and goes on a quest to discover the truth about the planet.

In Armored Core 6, cold and snowy scenes are one of the key environments in the game, providing players with a unique combat and exploration experience. These scenes usually present a desolate, icy atmosphere that contrasts strongly with the iron armor of the mechs against the snowy background, providing players with a visual impact. The cold and

snowy scenes are not only the battlefield for mech battles, but also a vivid reflection of the cruelty of war. These frozen areas, like the cruel nature of war, mercilessly test the will and courage of every mech driver. Secondly, the snowy environment also exacerbates the cruelty of war. In this frozen land, corpses were buried by ice and snow. The remains of mechs were scattered in all corners of the battlefield, becoming witnesses to the war. Every battle may bring huge casualties and losses, letting people deeply realize the cruelty and relentlessness of war. At the same time, the dilapidated industrial environments of the scenarios inject an icy atmosphere into the game. In abandoned factories, steel mills and industrial areas, mechs form a strong contrast with abandoned mechanical equipment and steel wreckage. The cold appearance of the mechs mirrors the industrialized runescape, presenting a cold and unforgiving view of war. This cold and merciless war picture can make players feel the horror and helplessness of war. The planet isn't all such a sight, though; in level 1.8, the player needs to destroy a super-giant armed mining machine in the desert. This is one of the few levels in the game that presents a warm atmosphere that presents a very stark contrast to the rest of the level.

I think it actually shows that the locals driving this giant mining machine are passionate and motivated to maintain the planet as opposed to the planet's competing corporate groups. The locals are more heartfelt than the corporations, who are cold-blooded.

But I don't think it's the portrayal of natural beauty that makes Armored Core 6 so unique, it's the sprawling cities and architectural design.

In the setting, everything on the planet is being rebuilt, and we can see on the map what these buildings look like as they are being constructed, abandoning the traditional notion of cities being built on the surface and instead constructing a large number of giant cities in the air. I think this was partly inspired by the Japanese architect Shin Isozaki. These buildings have structures that are framed and supported by very large structures that will not be changed in

the future. Secondly, as modules for living and activity areas, they are replaceable and interchangeable and can be extended and expanded indefinitely. Combined with the background of the game, these aerial cities were also built after the fires that once spread across the planet, very much in line with Shin Isozaki's view that cities are "ruins" and that

"anti-architecture" is architecture itself, and that only "anti-architectural history" is true "architectural history". Only "anti-architectural history" is the real "architectural history". Even the most magnificent buildings in reality have no meaning, and the real architectural thought can only exist in the program to be "everlasting". In Shin Isozaki's world, architecture has a temporal nature, and on the contrary, ideas can only remain in the space of thought for a long time because they do not exist. And this city design allows most of the iconic buildings in the game to be disassembled into two parts, one being the numerous mechanical modules and engineering equipment derived from a large number of real-life industrial facilities. And two, the structures used to carry them. This combination of reality and imagination enhances the realism and immersion of the game. And it also presents a different kind of futuristic feeling at the same time. I think the best example of the beauty of this design is the level 5.2-Take the Uninhabited Floating City, when at the end of the level, the whole city can be shown to us the real appearance of the city.

This is actually a giant space colony ship - Xylem, its design is perfectly in line with the design concept I mentioned earlier, the residential part of the city is built on top of a huge frame, the body of the frame does not change, but the skyscrapers and buildings on top of it can be constantly changed and constructed, the concept of the building becomes like a

constantly growing organism, full of life constantly evolving and reproducing. This unique design breaks the mold by incorporating elements from different cultures and eras to create a one-of-a-kind spatial experience. Players will experience a sense of wonder due to the discovery of unknown and unexpected elements as they explore these spaces. At the same time, this design has deep cultural and philosophical connotations, prompting players to think about the relationship between people and space, the environment, and society. This kind of design is not only to fulfill the needs of physical space, but also to stimulate people's inner contemplation and reflection.

All in all, Armored Core 6 offers players an unprecedented gaming experience through its unique design concepts and environmental settings. The architectural and industrial design of the game is not only visually beautiful, but also deeply affects the player's perception and emotional investment in the game world. From icy snowy battlefields to warm desert mining machinery to futuristic visions of cities in the sky, these designs showcase contrasting scenarios and deep cultural and philosophical reflections. The application of Shin Isozaki's architectural concepts to the game demonstrates a spatial design that transcends tradition, prompting players to enjoy the game while thinking deeply about the relationship between people, their environment, and society. Armored Core 6 is not only a feast for the eyes and emotions, but also a journey of exploration for the mind and soul.
